Animal & Equine Reiki at Spirit Song

A healing song for our sacred companions

At Spirit Song, I honour the profound wisdom and sensitivity of animals.

My Animal & Equine Reiki sessions are sacred exchanges — gentle, intuitive energy work offered with deep respect and love. Whether for a beloved pet or a majestic horse, Reiki helps restore balance, ease discomfort, and support emotional and physical healing.

Animals are naturally attuned to energy. They respond with grace and openness to the subtle flow of Reiki, often guiding the session with their own innate knowing. These treatments are offered in quiet presence, allowing your companion to receive exactly what they need — whether it’s peace, release, or reconnection.

About Animal & Equine Reiki

Animals gravitate to the peaceful energy Reiki creates, and benefit from Reiki in similar ways to humans. Because animals are so sensitive to the energy of the people around them, it makes sense that when people learn to balance and harmonise their own minds, bodies and spirits, this shift in energy attracts animals, makes them feel comfortable and safe, and creates stress-relief.

Animals teach us about trust, companionship and unconditional love. If you have animals around you, you’ll know how quickly they pick up on the emotions of the humans they live with. Animals are acutely sensitive to human energy and energy in general.  They work with energy constantly and have ‘summed’ us up the moment they meet us.

Animals suffer from physical illnesses and health conditions. At times, they sustain injuries or may require surgery. Aches and pains frequently emerge as they age. Mental health and emotional issues are common too and the latter often triggers behavioural problems.

Reiki is not a magical cure and is not an alternative to conventional veterinary care however reiki is a natural, calm therapy that promotes the body’s natural process of self-healing and is enjoyed by many animals.

Practical reasons for offering Reiki to pets and animals:

  • It is non-invasive requiring nothing but a Reiki practitioner and her/ his hands

  • Reiki healing may be given anywhere at any time – hands-on, hands-off or distantly in a vets practice, hospital, clinic, its ‘home’ environment or elsewhere, or even from distance via distant healing

  • It requires no equipment or technology

  • There is no need to move or disrupt an animal. It can be given to them wherever they are

  • It complements and supports conventional veterinary care

  • The animal is always in control. Reiki cannot be forced upon an animal. They chose to take it for as long as they like and how they like

  • It is relaxing, so may help pre-treatment /post-op

  • Reiki always works for an animal’s highest good

How is Reiki given to animals?

Human Reiki stresses using hands and hand positions, but animals do not communicate with us in the same way as we converse with one another. They are often not truly understood and similarly they do not always understand our communications or actions. However, animals are inherently more ‘aware of’ and ‘understanding of’ energy.

Animals do not need touch to connect with energy and, in some cases, can fear touch. With Animal Reiki, the practitioner never leads with their hands. Instead, we begin the Reiki session by meditating with the animal.

The animal will choose how (and indeed, if) they want to connect for healing, and we are led by the animal. Some animals may come towards the energy and want us to place our hands on them, others will want to remain distant. Honouring the choices and wisdom of animals in their own unique healing journeys is the most ethical way to help animals with Reiki.

As a Reiki Practitioner I will never diagnose or make a prediction about an animal’s health or wellbeing. Reiki healing is not an alternative to veterinary care but can be used alongside normal veterinary treatments.

Although there is no legal requirement to request or obtain veterinary consent before Reiki is offered to animals, it is recommended that any known or suspected physical health issues are diagnosed by a vet before a Reiki treatment takes place. A veterinary check would also be prudent prior to Reiki commencing if sudden changes are noted in an animal’s behaviour and this is the reason for Reiki being sought. Such behavioural changes may have arisen as a result of a physical health condition.

What happens during a session?

Where practical and possible, before a session commences, notes will be gathered from the owner or carer. This will include details about the animal, the reason Reiki is sought, the animal’s character, temperament, a brief case history and any diagnoses, whether Reiki has been offered before, and if so, further relevant details.

If they need exercise, its best to exercise them in advance but then ok for you to exercise them after a couple of hours to allow the healing energies to settle.

Reiki may be experienced as a flow of energy, mild tingling, warmth, coolness, other sensations, or nothing at all. Some animals may wish to sniff a practitioner’s hands or step away slightly. Others may come closer offering their sore parts to the practitioner.

Rather than just working on the animal/horse there may also be a need to offer Reiki to the owner or carer. Animals are very sensitive to energy and without realising it, if their owners or carers are stressed or anxious, their animals pick up on this and it can trigger or exacerbate emotional and behavioural issues in them. As a result, there is a need to sometimes work with both the owner and the animal to help resolve an animal’s issue.

Horses:

A Reiki session would ideally be carried out in familiar surroundings where the horse is most comfortable like a stable or enclosed area, but Reiki can be carried out remotely (over fields) so if you don’t have an area to confine a horse this is not a barrier.

It is fine for the horse to have hay to eat during the session and water should always be available. External noises and distractions should be minimised where possible.

There will be an initial consultation with the owner, I will then spend time standing in the stable or field connecting to the horse and giving Reiki. This could be hands off or on depending on the wishes of the horse and I use a range of Reiki symbols. My hands will be drawn to where they are needed the most.

Domestic animals:

A Reiki session for domestic animals will be carried out in the animals home as this is where they will be most at ease. It will need to be a peaceful environment. A Reiki session would ideally be carried out in their familiar surroundings where the animal is most comfortable like a hutch, bird cage or on their bed or where they like to relax.

How long do sessions last?

Animal reiki healing sessions usually last around 60 minutes.

Reiki can also be shared from a distance. By simply allowing Reiki to flow to a person, animal or situation, through the power of intent, focus and meditation, I can carry out a complete Reiki treatment on a specific animal, either in person or at any distance.

Frequency of treatments

Reiki healing is most effective when given through a series of sessions, and for longer lasting results 3 to 6 treatments is advised. However, a one off treatment will still have a positive effect and will help your animal.
